Dioscorea villosa, also known as wild yam, Mexican yam, colic root and shan yao, is tuberous perennial vine with species native to North America and China. Its roots are dry and narrow, unlike sweet potatoes and the common yam of North America.

The active chemical compound in wild yam is diosgenin, believed to be a precursor of steroid hormones. It was used to make the first birth control pills in the 1960's.

Wild yam may display antispasmodic properties, although this has not been proven. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it was used by herbalists for menstral cramps issues with childbirth.
