Tea tree oil is steam distilled from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, or tea tree. Native to Australia (southeast Queensland and the northeastern coast of New South Wales), this tree is sometimes called "snow-in-summer" in reference to its fluffy white flowers.
Australian Aboriginals chewed tea tree leaves during times of sickness and used them for cuts, burns and infections of the skin. Lore also suggests the leaves were steeped as a substitute for tea, thus forming the name "tea tree."
The active constituents in tea tree, terpenoids, may display antimicrobial, antiseptic and antifungal activity. Terpinen-4-ol, the most abundant constituent, is thought to offer the most powerful benefits.
Tea tree oil has a broad range of external use and is also utilized in aromatherapy. The scent is often described as warm and camphor-like.
