St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) is a small, shrub-like plant with animated yellow flowers. It is native to Europe, Asia, Africa, and the western United States, and is considered to be a weed when left to grow wild. Other names include Tipton’s weed, rosin rose, goatweed, chase-devil or Klamath weed.
The flowering tops and leaves of St. John's Wort were used in ancient Greek medicine for nervous disorders. Today, it remains a popular herb used to support a positive mood and emotional wellbeing. St. John’s Wort is also antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory.
The active compounds in St. John’s Wort, hypericin and hyperforin, have been studied as an alternative treatment for depression. Research suggests St. John’s wort may work similar to an SSRI, changing the balance of mood-regulating neurotransmitters like serotonin in the brain.
