Rhodiola rosea is a perennial herb with yellow flowers. Native to parts of Europe, Asia and Alaska, it prefers growing in cold, rocky regions of the planet. Other common names include arctic root, rose root and golden root.

Rhodiola has a long history of medicinal use in Iceland, Sweden, France, Russia and Greece. It was mentioned in the De Materia Medica, an ancient encyclopedia of herbal medicine, by the Greek physician Dioscorides.
