Black cohosh (Actaea racemosa) is a flowering perennial herb in the buttercup family, native to the United States and Canada. Native Americans discovered the root relived gynecological issues, including menstrual cramps and menopause, and subdued cold symptoms.

In 1830 the plant made it into the U.S. Pharmacopoeia under the name “black snakeroot,” and its medicinal use was continued throughout 19th century America to induce menstruation. It became a popular treatment in the mid-1950’s in Europe for women’s health issues, and is widely used today for the uncomfortable symptoms of PMS and menopause.
