Bilberry, also known as whortleberry or European blueberry, is a small, shrub-like plant native to Northern Europe. Its fruit resembles the common blueberry, but is smaller in size with a dark, blue-black color, red or purple pulp and strong flavor.

Used in traditional European medicine for nearly 1,000 years, modern research now shows bilberries contain anthocyanosides, water-soluble vacuolar pigments responsible for the red, purple and blue hues that saturate many fruits, vegetables and flowers, including bilberry, acai and goji berry. These concentrated pigments are known for their free-radical fighting capabilities, and may also offer anti-inflammatory and anti-viral benefits.
