What is Maca Root?
Maca root is a nutrition-packed vegetable, also known as “Peruvian ginseng,” that grows in the mountain plateaus of the Peruvian Andes. It is rich in amino acids, phytonutrients, vitamins, and minerals, and has been used as a traditional source of both food and medicine by indigenous people since the time of the Incas.
Health Benefits of Maca Root
This plant has been credited with many healthful effects, including:
- Increasing energy, stamina and endurance
- Enhancing libido
- Supporting the immune system and adrenal function
- Reducing chronic fatigue
- Regulating and supporting the endocrine system
Maca root is typically found in 3 different varieties: yellow (also known as cream), red, and black. The color refers to the peel of the root vegetable, with "red" maca ranging in hue from light pink to red to dark purple.
All three hues share the same adaptogenic properties and nutritional properties:
Maca root is a powerful adaptogen that has long been used to treat menopausal symptoms and is now being prescribed by many health practitioners as a safe, effective alternative to Hormone Replacement Therapy.
Maca's reputation as a powerful enhancer of strength and stamina and as a libido-fertility herb goes back more than 500 years, and today it is gaining worldwide attention for its effectiveness.
From a nutritional standpoint, maca is rich in sugar, proteins, starches, and important minerals, such as iron, magnesium, calcium, and phosphorous. It also contains numerous trace minerals (including iodine), B vitamins, linoleic and oleic oils (essential fatty acids), and 18 amino acids, including 7 of the 9 essential amino acids.
As a food, the dried root is sweet and spicy, and is considered a delicacy. When boiled in water, maca is sweeter than cocoa; when roasted, it tastes like butterscotch. It can be used to make jams, puddings, broths, and juices. The dried powder has a unique flavor that blends especially well with teas.
Additional benefits of Red Maca
Red maca is among the rarest of the maca roots. Under phytonutrient analysis, red maca was found to possess somewhat higher levels of alkaloids, saponins and steroids, and higher amounts of antioxidant compounds.
Studies show that red maca may support prostate health in men, possibly reducing prostate size. In women, red maca may support bone density.
Red maca also has a milder, sweeter flavor than its yellow or black counterparts.
Who should take Red Maca?
- Men looking for prostate support
- Women wishing to support healthy bone density
- Anyone looking for a mild, sweet tasting maca
Please note: Although named "red" maca, the appearance of red maca powder is similar to that of yellow or cream maca. The pink, red, or purple hue of the red maca variety extends only to the outside skin of the maca root. Red maca powder is a cream colored powder, and is not a red colored powder.
Many people use maca as a daily tonic added to their super green drink or smoothie, or just plain in water. Add it to your favorite food bar recipe for an extra energy boost.
Our organic red maca root powder is made up of roots of the red maca variety, dried at low temperatures and then ground into a powder.
